Designing a logo concept system for four letters

A four-letter mark gives a designer constraints that can be productive. This guide walks through building a small, reusable logo system for an initials name, using PXTQ as the worked example.

Step one: choose the structural idea — PXTQA useful path from inputto understanding

01

Step one: choose the structural idea

Begin by deciding how the four letters will be arranged. Options include a single horizontal wordmark, a two-by-two stacked grid, or a monogram where strokes are shared. For PXTQ, a worked example might test the grid first, since four letters fill four cells evenly. Sketch each option in black on white at a large size, then shrink it to roughly the size of a browser tab. Keep the arrangement that stays legible when small. Reject any version that depends on color or fine detail to be understood, because those qualities often disappear in real use.

Step two: build a set of variants

A single logo rarely covers every context, so define a short family. For PXTQ, create a full wordmark for headers, a compact grid for app icons, and a one-color version for stamps, documents and dark backgrounds. Set a minimum size for each variant and a clear-space rule, such as the width of one letter stroke on all sides. Record these decisions in a one-page sheet. The goal is that anyone placing the mark, from a partner to a freelancer, can do so correctly without asking the designer for every new use case.

Step three: test in real placements — PXTQA useful path from inputto understanding

Step three: test in real placements

Before finalizing, mock up the mark in places it will actually appear: a favicon, a social avatar, a code repository banner, an invoice header and a slide footer. Check that the letters remain distinguishable, since P and Q can blur together at small sizes. If they do, adjust the tail of the Q or the bowl of the P until the difference is clear. Ask two or three people unfamiliar with the project to read the mark aloud from a quick glance. Revise based on where they hesitate, then freeze the system and document it.
